With regard to the growing medium in plant containers, the progress over time has been equally slow. For example, soil as a growing medium in containers has, only over the last 50 years or so, been replaced by peat mixes with addition of some bark, vermiculite etc. Most growing media require nutrient feeding and frequent watering during the growth and display cycle of the plants. The optimal nutrient feeding and watering in these media can be difficult to achieve and there is a tendency to assume "lack of a green thumb" as the primary cause of failure of plant growth.
